Ocean Prediction Center Virtual Tour - Backup and Development Desk

The Backup and Development Desk is an integral component to maintaining the continuous operations of the OPC. Should one of the 5 operational desk computers suffer a catastrophic failure, a forecaster can quickly switch to this machine to complete analysis and forecast products.

This desk is not limited to OPC internal support. If the Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch (TAFB) or the Weather Forecast Office in Honolulu require a backup of their operations, the Backup and Development Desk is capable of completing the necessary products to keep uninterrupted services for our NWS sister offices. OPC would use this desk to perform operational backup for another office in the case of a power outage, planned software or hardware upgrades, or any other unforeseen circumstance that would prevent forecasts and analysis products from being created and sent to the public.

Last, but certainly not least, this desk is essential to ongoing forecaster training and development. Meteorology is a constantly evolving and improving science; new weather models and forecasting techniques are developed at a rapid pace. To stay in tune with the latest science, and to continue to maintain and produce the best forecasts, OPC forecasters use this desk for professional training, development, and growth.
