Marine Weather Discussion for N Pacific Ocean
NWS Ocean Prediction Center Washington DC
120 AM PST Tue Feb 20 2018

.FORECAST DISCUSSION...Major features/winds/seas/significant
.weather for the North Pacific N of 30N and E of 150W.

The ASCAT pass from 05Z shows the strongest winds occurring over
the central California waters, with gale conditions found in the
coastal zones W of Point Reyes. Several altimeter passes during
the past several hours indicate seas to 20 ft across the inner
offshore waters W of Point Conception. The overall forecast
philosophy hasn't changed much over the past several days as the
overall pattern remains stable. A high pressure ridge will
persist W of the waters allowing a series of short-waves to dig
SE across the offshore waters during the upcoming week. For the
most part the 00Z global models are in pretty good agreement with
only minor differences in the area of maximum winds. I decided to
use a blend when populating the grids. I used a blend of 66/33
GFS 10/30M/ECMWF.

Seas...both the ENP and WAM initialized well across the waters,
although the WAM was slightly better and showed higher seas
initially across the central and southern California waters than
the ENP did. I used a similar blend to match the wind grids two
thirds ENP to one third WAM.

.EXTRATROPICAL STORM SURGE GUIDANCE...N/A.
